The body text, the actual content

The body text, the content of your website that makes the difference

Google determines the relevance of the main text of a webpage based on the keywords used in a search. Use the most important keywords in your text, but not too often, else Google might identify your webpage as spam and will allot a lower score. Human visitors also dislike repetition, this will make the text dull and unnatural. Opt for a good mix of keywords and related words.

How do you write quality web content?

  • Use Google to search for webpages that score high for a keyword you are working on.
  • Analyse the amount of text these contain and which keywords and related words are used.
  • Whatever you do, DO NOT copy text: Google detects copied text and punishes with a lower score.
  • Create valuable content to prove to your human visitors that you know what you are doing and deserve their trust.
  • Encourage your visitors through calls-to-action to realise the objectives for which the webpage was created.

A strictly mathematical approach to writing content – precise amounts of words, with specific percentages of keywords and related words – will get you a higher position in Google search results, but keep your texts fun to read for your human visitors.

People tend to scan a text rather than really read it: they read the title and the first paragraph, quickly glance at the images, read the subtitles and scroll a bit. That is why it is useful to ‘highlight’ important words – including a number of times the keywords – for example by putting them in – bold – between the tag . This draws attention to these words. Google pays little attention to text with special layout (e.g. bold, italic, underscore), but it is useful for human visitors.

How does the body text of your webpage compare to that of webpages that have top scores in Google for a specific keyword? What words does Google define as synonyms and / or related words in respect to the keyword?
